Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is typically regarded as a complementary or alternative therapy. While it may not be effective for everyone, many people find it very beneficial, and it is now commonly included in treatment options at modern pain management clinics and NHS centres.

It is believed that the needles stimulate nerves in a way that helps to relieve pain and tension. Traditional practices also emphasize the concept of stimulating energy flow throughout the body.

At Thurrock health Hubs, we offer acupuncture as part of our extensive care services.

How does it work?

It is believed that the needles stimulate nerves in a way that helps to relieve pain and tension. Traditional practices also emphasize the concept of stimulating energy flow throughout the body.

What to expect?

During an acupuncture session, a trained practitioner will gently insert a series of very fine needles into the targeted area. These needles remain in place for about 15- 20 minutes, depending on the specific treatment, before being carefully removed.

The process is generally painless, although you may experience a dull ache or sensations like tingling. Usually, multiple sessions are needed for optimal results. This is performed in conjunction with other treatment modalities.

Is acupuncture safe?

When performed by a trained and licensed practitioner, acupuncture is generally safe. The needles used are sterile, single-use, and very thin, minimizing the risk of infection or injury. Some patients may experience minor side effects like bruising or slight discomfort at the needle sites.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required varies depending on the individual's condition and response to treatment. Some people may feel relief after a single session, while others might need several treatments over a period of weeks or months for optimal results.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture typically causes minimal discomfort. The needles are much thinner than those used for injections, and most people feel little to no pain when they are inserted. Some may feel a slight tingling or a sensation of pressure, which usually subsides quickly.
