A corticosteroid injection, guided by anatomical landmarks, is a medical procedure used to deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly into a specific area of the body to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.
This technique relies on the healthcare provider's knowledge of anatomical landmarks to accurately locate the injection site without the use of imaging technologies like ultrasound or fluoroscopy.
Initial Consultation: Your healthcare provider will evaluate your condition and discuss the benefits and risks of corticosteroid injections.
Preparation: The injection site will be cleaned and sterilized. Sometimes, a local anesthetic is used to numb the area.
Procedure: Using anatomical landmarks, the healthcare provider will accurately locate the injection site.
A corticosteroid medication, often combined with a local anesthetic, is injected into the targeted area.
The procedure typically takes only a few minutes.
After the Injection: You may experience temporary pain or discomfort at the injection site. Rest the affected area for at least 24 hours and avoid strenuous activities for a few days. Follow any specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
Corticosteroid injections deliver an anti inflammatory substance called hydrocortisone into a person’s joints, muscles, or soft tissues.
Hydrocortisone is a synthetic steroid, an artificial version of cortisol, the hormone produced by the adrenal glands in our body to reduce inflammation.

The are used to administer medications directly into a specific anatomical location, such as a joint, tendon sheath, or around a nerve, using anatomical landmarks to guide the injection. This method does not involve real-time imaging (like ultrasound) but relies on the practitioners knowledge of anatomy and palpation skills.
